The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993
I never wrote a review of The Nightmare Before Christmas when I first saw it, but I remember not being overly impressed. Still, a lot of people love it and I decided to watch it again, this time in 4k on Disney Plus, even though I also bought it on blu-ray at some point. I felt much the same way. It seems odd that Disney would make a musical horror movie about Christmas. And it is definitely horror, with some pretty gross imagery, though mostly it tries to be cute with everything. It is not for little kids. Maybe more for cynical, but artistic, preteens. There is a lot of creativity at work and the songs are a nice touch, though they get pushed to the back as the movie progresses. There aren’t a lot of big names in the voice cast, though there are some familiar ones. I am not crazy about the style of animation at work with the long skinny limbs and the very gray color palette. Still, it is definitely artistic, the songs are decent, and it is a clever story. Like a lot of Tim Burton movies, it wows at the same time that it disappoints.
