Postcards from the Edge 1990

B+

This was the best of the free movies I could pick from a Sony giveaway and I decided to go ahead and start watching, which is unusual for me. I remember hearing about this movie, based on a book written by Carrie Fisher, but never watched. It is a good movie and still holds up pretty well. It helps that it stars Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine (based a little on Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds) with a nice turn by Gene Hackman. Not everything works. A few of the lines seem like they are a little too cute for their own good, along with some kind of weak side characters, including an odd romance with Dennis Quaid. Still, most everything works and it is easy to feel some sympathy for a star whose life is messed up on drugs, since it is still such a regular thing. Wisely, it is less about the struggle with drugs than the struggle with everyone who knows the person has a drug problem. That keeps it more relateable and lighter. It is still very much a mother-daughter movie, but easy enough to watch even if you are neither of those.
