Drive 2011

B+

I had heard good reviews of this movie, but knew very little about it. It got to the top of my Netflix queue eventually. It was a better movie than I expected, with a good story, nice performances, and dark mood, offset only by some gory violence that would be more at home in a low-budget horror movie. The movie centers around a professional driver who does stunt work in movies, works on cars, and has no problem participating in the occasional criminal getaway. He gets caught up in something big and bad, and just wants out. It reminded me a lot of 2004’s Collateral where something kind of similar happens to Jamie Foxx, who plays a taxi driver. Even the 80’s mood matches.

Ultimately, like Collateral, there isn’t a lot of new ground here, just a well-executed movie about an everyday guy getting tangled up with (and trying to get unentangled from) criminals. The violence is over-the-top, including the main character who won’t carry a gun, but has no problem killing someone with a hammer.
