Men in Black II 2002

B+

The original Men in Black was a great precursor to Marvel movies, a sort of sci-fi movie with a lot of action, special effects, and humor. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith turned out to be a great on screen couple, a study in contrasts. The sequel does not get as good reviews as the first and certainly it can’t be as inventive as the origin story. So instead they are looking for some kind of space alien related thing that Smith and Jones can do all over again. So, while very similar, it is still fun to watch these two. I know I had seen bits and pieces of this movie before because parts of it seemed very familiar, but I don’t believe I had seen the whole thing. The plot about the aliens isn’t all that complicated and they don’t really drag it out with a lot of endless action sequences and fights (like Marvel does), so the focus is as much on the humor and some of the main characters as they interact with different aliens. The story, action, and humor can’t carry the movie by themselves, but together they make for pretty good entertainment.
