The Rookie 2002

B

I had always heard good things about this movie, but figuring it was kind of a typical sports movie, it took me a while to get around to watching it, even after I was able to get a blu-ray copy for free from Disney’s reward program. It is a good movie and probably met my expectations. It is based on a true story of a high school teacher and coach who gets a chance to pitch in major league baseball even though he should be past his prime (Dennis Quaid is about 46 in the movie, but the actual person was 35 at the time). The baseball story is pretty straightforward, but you also see some of the important people in his life, like the team he coaches, his wife and kids, plus a problematic relationship with his father. It doesn’t earn points on originality, but the acting is good and the movie stays enjoyable, even with a little sag towards the end before a big finish.
