Big Fish 2003

A-

I’d heard some good things and was looking forward to seeing this one, but also a little leery. I had heard that it was a collection of tall tales centered around a dying father and an angry son. I know a chick flick, even when it is disguised by making everyone men.

Your enjoyment of the movie depends a lot on how much you are willing to accept the tall tales featuring Ewan McGregor in kind of a similar role to what he played in Moulin Rouge. I wasn’t crazy about him in Moulin Rouge, but I wound up liking that movie, and I wound up liking this one too. One thing that helps is that Billy Crudup as the grown son, who is tired of hearing all of his father’s crazy stories, plays the cynic so that the audience doesn’t have to. Instead we just sit back and judge. And pretty soon you get taken in by the old stories most of which aren’t really connected but have a similar air of fantasy about them even while they center around a story of boy gets girl.

Anyway, it worked for me and I would recommend it to just about anyone as a good clean movie that is quirky and entertaining but also takes its time.

I’ll give it an A-.
