Intolerable Cruelty 2003

B-

I didn’t know much about this movie, but I had wanted to see it for a long time. But for some reason, when George Clooney works for the Coen brothers, he seems to stop acting and starts acting goofy. He plays a divorce lawyer who is very successful, but is feeling empty. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays a gold digger who he falls for. She never seems to really care for him and he has no real reason to fall for her other than a nice first date. As the movie wears on, the legal issues at the center of the plot get flimsier and flimsier. So it is more like a farce about a divorce lawyer and a gold digger? The last part of the movie is actually pretty decent and it seems like it should work as it makes fun of flimsy marriages and divorce litigation, but mostly it just feels tired and amateurish. And goofy. Billy Bob Thornton has a couple of outstanding scenes, but he feels like the only person in the movie who knows what he should be doing. If you want something kind of light, but with some dark humor, maybe this will do, but it is mostly just very average.
