I should have been suspicious of a movie that got nominations in three of the four acting categories. This is a thoroughly depressing movie which always makes for Oscar paydirt. I can’t complain about the performances, which were very strong. Though Eastwood’s nomination surprised some, he really shines here. Morgan Freeman plays the same basic part as in The Shawshank Redemption. It suits him at least. Hillary Swank does a great job in a very physical role.
I don’t think it would be fair to give away the major plot point midway through the film. But I certainly enjoyed the movie before that happened and I would have appreciated it if they could have stuck with that. As it was, the somber ending left me cold.
