Robots 2005

B-

It seems like I remember when Robots came out, but maybe it didn’t get great reviews, so I never saw it. But I was able to get the Blu-ray for $1, so it didn’t have to be that great. I watched it on my iPad in HD and it looks pretty amazing, much more appropriate for a larger screen. The colors are bright and there is a lot of great 3D action (though my disk is 2D). Everything starts out pretty well, as a married robot couple send off for parts and when they arrive, put it all together and literally make a baby robot. Then it gets a little odd figuring out how robots grow and change, get hurt, and maybe die. The plot concerns an evil corporation trying to maximize profits even though it will lead to the death of many robots. So that is all kind of dark, but also kind of tired. The main robot is voiced by Ewan McGregor doing away with his Scottish accent which he doesn’t do entirely well. Why not get an American or let McGregor sound like himself? Mel Brooks and Robin Williams have significant parts as well as Greg Kinnear (less recognizable), but surprisingly don’t bring much to their parts. It was fun to watch and goes by pretty quickly, so all in all this is an entertaining movie, but other than the world of robots, not that original, with some rough edges on how things work. Some of the action scenes towards the end are more frantic, but the more leisurely pace early in the movie lets you see more of what was going on and enjoy some neat Rube Goldberg contraptions.
