Red 2010

A-

For some reason, I felt like I might like this movie, and it finally made it to the top of my Netflix queue. I remember when it came out, and that Bruce Willis plays a retired CIA operative that someone is trying to eliminate. That’s probably about all you need to know. This isn’t a movie that will make you think real hard, in fact you will do well not to think very hard while watching, and instead just enjoy it. There is a pretty good story here, and some good action, but mostly this is a comedy. In that sense it is maybe a little like Beverly Hills Cop where it was never intended to be a comedy until they hired Eddie Murphy. The comedy lets you look past the rest of what is going on. The thing that really helps the movie is a great cast. Bruce Willis is great at this kind of thing, the unwilling participant who is operating on a different level than those sent after him. But he is joined by Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren. I was surprised to see Mary-Louise Parker, as Willis’ romantic interest, and while I have never watched Weeds, she was a favorite of mine from West Wing.

So, great cast, lots of action, and the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, while still delivering. It won’t blow you away, but it is definitely worth watching.
