Scott Pilgrim vs. the World 2010

A-

I didn’t know much about this movie, but it was available at a good price from Best Buy and got good reviews. I don’t think I realized it was directed by Edgar Wright or how deep the cast is, but I knew Michael Cera from Arrested Development and a flurry of movies he was in after that series ended. It starts out a little like a hipster rom-com, but the movie is based on a series of graphic novels, which, combined with the director’s history, should give you an idea where it is headed, or at least where it is not headed, which means anything conventional. This unpredicatability, plus the direction it goes, makes it fun, while it still stays true to the central hipster rom com. The cast includes two future Marvel Avengers (Chris Evans and Brie Larson), plus some other surprisingly big names, as well as a few lesser known names that do a great job. The cast is likeable and everything is funny and/or ridiculous. The challenges start out a little too strong to maintain that level of intensity, and some of the action stuff tends to displace some of the life lessons into overly simplistic nuggets, but there is still a good mixture of comedy, romance, action, and coming of age styles.
