Bernie 2011

B+

I do not remember this movie when it came out. With Jack Black in the lead I may have just ignored it though. However when a batch of overstocks hit Dollar Tree, this movie had pretty good reviews, so I bought it. The movie has a “real crime” mockumentary feel with interviews with very authentic seeming townspeople (in fact actual locals, but following a script). The movie revolves around the titular character, an obsequious assistant funeral director who dotes on much older widows. It is based on a true story, though mostly told from Bernie’s side. Jack Black is very good as Bernie, a super polite, possibly gay, guy who may or may not be after a sugar mama. It seems to capture real life in a small East Texas town. The object of his attentions is the richest, orneriest widow in town, played perfectly by Shirley MacLaine. There is a plot, but mostly you are just getting to know Bernie and enjoy the performances and quirks of the characters and gossiping townspeople. Based on an article about the crime that eventually takes place, the movie could have a tabloid feel, but instead seems mostly a character-driven comedy, but still has some crime intrigue to keep your interest. It is maybe a little too easy and too silly at times but Black stays away from playing it over the top. Your enjoyment of the movie will hinge on how much you enjoy the portrayal of main characters and the Texas townsfolk. I liked it but can’t give an A without a little more going for it.
