Limitless 2011

B+

I didn’t know much about this movie, but it got pretty good reviews and was available at Dollar Tree for $1, so it seemed like a good pick. The movie is about a writer, played by Bradley Cooper, who takes a new drug that lets him use the majority of the brain that human never use (which is a myth). Suddenly he is able to understand all kinds of things, see patterns nobody else can see, and fight better (?). This is a good role for Cooper since he can play the slob with writer’s block as well as the brilliant guy he becomes. I like movies like this that explore what it would be like to have amazing brain power and what a person who is given such a gift would do with it. It is a classic fable setup. There are downsides of what is happening to him as well, and the movie stays entertaining as you root for the likeable Cooper to achieve some kind of greatness. I usually pause a movie a lot during the slow parts, but this one stayed interesting throughout and I enjoyed it a lot. It is also shot in a way that gives it a neat look without being overly shaky or choppy. There were a few things I wasn’t crazy about and the more I thought about the movie the less well it seems to hold up. So while at first I was thinking it should get an A, honestly it is probably more of a B+ for me.

The blu-ray I bought was cheap because the production company, Relativity Media, went out of business. Still a good deal, it has absolutely no extras and previews that are hard to skip through, similar to some disks produced for rental only.
