Rio 2011

B

I never saw Rio when it came out, but I got interested in it after gettting a lot of other animated movies and seeing that Rio had a sequel. There is a good story about wildlife poachers, some birds in Rio de Janeiro, and a couple of humans trying to save them. The birds are colorful, there are a lot of star voices, and there are some decent songs, but somehow the magic is missing. I think one problem is there isn’t a lot of humor other than noisy, silly characters (all characters are overly enthusiastic) and some slapstick humor. The main character is a parrot who can’t fly, but we never really know why he can’t fly. In that sense there isn’t much depth given to a big cast of characters. It isn’t a big miss, but the movie feels a little too simple and yet too busy. It is still entertaining and Rio makes a great setting, but the movie is mostly kind of empty fun. But still fun, and that’s important.
