Pacific Rim 2013

C-

I got a deluxe digital copy of this movie for free that included UHD, Dolby Atmos, and all the trimmings. I wanted to try out a big colorful, noisy movie on my new home entertainment system even if the reviews of Pacific Rim weren’t stellar. Unfortunately, it is not a good movie. It feels a little like a cartoon brought to life (like Transformers): everything is very broad, the writing is terrible, and the lines are delivered in the most stereotyped ways, with tough guys, super geeks, and cold distant superior officers. And it is a big monster movie, like Godzilla which is not one of my favorites. That said, there is an interesting premise for why monsters are showing up and it isn’t just nuclear war or pollution. And for whatever reason, giant robots with two mind-melded people at the controls, are how humanity has decided to fight the monsters. A lot of the big action scenes happen at night so the CGI is less amazing than it is kind of murky. I don’t know if the technology wasn’t quite there yet or they just wanted to play around with the bioluminescence of the monsters, but it is a little hard to tell what is going on in the fights, which is the main draw of the movie. It does sound good and mostly looks great, but at heart the movie just seems kind of bad.
