Brooklyn 2015

B+

Brooklyn has gotten some very positive reviews and appeared on a few early top ten lists, but I had heard almost nothing about it. It is a pretty simple story: a period piece set in the early 1950’s, about a girl who moves from Ireland to Brooklyn. There are a few difficulties and I imagine a lot was left out of the book the movie is based upon. It seems more like something that would show up on PBS Masterpiece Theater than in a movie house in 2015. The biggest part of the story is a romance (or two), but it is also the story of this girl trying to make it in New York. The lead actress does a very good job, crying on queue when required, and the director knows how to get the most out of her expressions and everyone’s pretty Irish eyes. It is well made and enjoyable, and will appeal to women and people who think there is too much swearing in movies these days.
