Me and Earl and the Dying Girl 2015

B+

I either didn’t hear much about this movie or just didn’t want to watch a movie about a dying girl. But I looked it up while picking out a Screen Pass and it seemed like a decent choice. It seems like there are a lot of movies about life in high school and this is one version of that, where a social neutral (not really social or anti-social) film geek befriends a girl at his high school who has just been diagnosed with leukemia. It is a mostly cute and quirky movie, but it is also kind of hit or miss as the main character has some self-inflicted issues and the viewer is manipulated. Even though the main character is wary of friendship, he winds up in two pretty strong friendships, though there are ups and downs. One of his main activities is making movies, so it has some appeal to film geeks (he makes parodies of art house movies) and film makers. It makes sense that a lot of movies get made by people who communicate through film I guess. It is a good movie, but has enough flaws to bring it down to a B+.
