Keanu 2016

C+

This movie became available in a wave of movies at Dollar Tree and got decent reviews. Key and Peele are funny guys, but their humor is usually a little over the top and silly, not really my thing. They play two straight laced guys who have to act like tough gang members in order to recover a stolen cat, the titular Keanu. So the first third of the movie sees them going over the top acting like nerds doing a poor job of pretending to be tough. If you like seeing them riff like that (reminds me a lot of the Scared Straight skits on SNL), you may enjoy it, but it was almost painful for me. And it’s not just their performance, but why they are even acting like this and how this is supposed to get the cat back. It just doesn’t work that well. There are a lot of clumsy moments like that. Eventually it gets into the main plot and the movie improves, but it is still kind of dumb with poor pacing and then has sort of a tacked on ending after the better ending (plus a post-credits scene). Because it is a comedy, maybe they felt like not everything had to make sense and they could just put together a bunch of half-improvised takes and it would work out. If you love Key and Peele, don’t miss this, but otherwise it is easy to skip.
