The Nice Guys 2016
I heard some favorable things about this movie in some discussions online, but the previews made it seem kind of silly. It is silly in a lot of ways, but there is also a decent convoluted crime story and is set in the 1970’s Los Angeles, involving the adult film industry. The movie centers around an incompetent and crooked private investigator played by Ryan Gosling and a vigilante for hire played by Russell Crowe. For the most part the movie is a comedy, but there is a lot of violence and some HBO style nudity by extras in the background. Things get moving pretty quickly and the breakneck pace continues as the investigation grows and develops into something more than a missing porn star case.
It is fun to watch and Gosling is good as the crooked idiot and Crowe as the frustrated partner. It seems kind of similar to Get Shorty though maybe not quite as smart and a lot more shootouts. It isn’t a great movie, but it is entertaining and could easily be a staple on television where people flipping channels might watch for a few minutes and then end up watching it the whole way through.
