Sing 2016

This movie didn’t get very good reviews but some people said they really enjoyed it, so I wound up buying a cheap digital copy and watched it on my iPad during my commute. Right off the bat I really did not like Matthew McConaughey as the voice of the koala, Buster Moon. The salesman, incompetent, often dishonest theater owner was just obnoxious to me. Most of the other characters aren’t that bad, but not that great either, just really stereotyped roles given to different animals, and none of them really fleshed out that well. The plot of the movie revolves around tryouts for a singing contest, like American Idol, which is not a show I like so that much less interest from me. Then the songs aren’t necessarily that great either, mostly just old and newer pop songs. Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing” wasn’t that good the first time around. There are a lot of big names in the cast so it is fun matching those up. A lot of the humor is pretty basic, but it is kind of fun watching a mother pig try to manage 20 piglets. It is a far cry from 2016’s other talking clothed animal movie, Zootopia, but that was one of my favorite movies of the year. The movie isn’t terrible and if you like singing, or American Idol and enjoy broad humor, it could be worth watching.
