The BFG 2016

B+

This movie got decent, but not great reviews and didn’t seem to have much of an impact on the box office. Disney really pushed the home video on the Disney Movie Club, which got my interest, but ultimately the only reason I watched it was because it was available on Netflix. With low expectations and no idea what the movie was really about, I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. Mark Rylance turns in another great wry performance voicing the big friendly giant of the title and also providing a lot of the mannerisms and look of the CGI character. The other bigger, less friendly giants are also great visual characters. The little girl (not CGI) also does a very good job in the lead. The story is fun to watch unfold as you see the world of the giants, the giant interacting with the human world, and some neat visuals with the work of the giant. The main plot is amusing and stays light for the most part. In the end it is a well-made children’s fantasy that probably would have done better in a year that was a little less crowded with other very good offerings for kids.
