Hunt for the Wilderpeople 2016

A-

I hadn’t heard of this movie, but I got a $10 credit on Amazon for movies and picked this for fitting in my budget and getting good reviews. It was still over a year before I actually watched it, but I am glad I did. Essentially it is a buddy adventure movie, maybe not that different from Up, with a lot of comedy to keep things light, but a few heavier themes. The movie takes place in the bush of New Zealand and features mostly New Zealand actors, most of whom seem to be at least of partially indigenous descent, including the main character, an overweight and troublesome foster kid who spouts jokes and pop references while teamed up in the jungle with an old man, played by Sam Neill. Though it takes its time, the New Zealand setting as well as director and writer Taika Waititi’s sense of humor make the movie unique and raise it above movies that might have a similar story.
