Baby Driver 2017

B+

This is a fun movie, but I am not sure why it is getting such raves. It checks all the boxes: good story, characters, music, action. There are some great actors that I really like including Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jamie Foxx, and Jon Hamm, though Kevin Spacey is a real weak link, not quite capable of making his daddy-o lingo sound natural. Ansel Elgort plays the main character and is also a little stiff, though some of that is his character. It is very fun seeing so much of Atlanta in the movie, with lots of familiar sites, plus a pizza place that is literally across the street from my office and that I have been to dozens of times. The music is pretty neat and the director, Edgar Wright, says that the whole thing started with him thinking that one of the songs was the perfect theme song for a getaway, and then he built everything from there. They are not all great songs, but they work in the movie quite well. The chase scenes are good and pretty frequent and some of the bad guys are pretty relentless. I didn’t totally buy one key wrinkle towards the end which I won’t give away, but by then I was pretty happy with the movie, so okay. Definitely worth seeing.
