Downsizing 2017

B

I came very close to watching this when it was in the theaters, but a friend of mine said it was terrible. I still wanted to see it though, so I picked it from a list of others to watch during a very long airplane flight. Advertised as sort of a light-hearted adventure movie, there are actually quite a few issues explored in a world where you can opt to be shrunk to 5 inches tall, costing you much less money in living expenses and greatly reducing your environmental impact. It is kind of like a long episode of Twilight Zone in the way it takes a sci-fi premise and applies it to see the sociological ramifications. It may not be a terribly smart movie and some of the mechanics of being tiny seem to have been overlooked. As the tiny people in the movie put their lives in the hands of others and must be carried around carefully in a shoebox size enclosure, I felt an uncomfortable number of parallels to my situation as I sat in an airplane being flown across an ocean. It also adds a couple of downbeat plotlines, so I can see where people may not like it. While it may not be that great a movie ultimately, I do like that they were willing to take a chance, but it doesn’t seem to hold together that well.
