Deadpool 2 2018

B+

I enjoyed the first Deadpool, but still only gave it a B. I wanted to see the sequel when it came out, but never got around to it. Then on Black Friday I was able to get the 4K disk pretty cheap at Walmart and it seemed like a good choice for ultra high definition. This movie is probably better overall, but the newness of a wisecracking self-aware superhero who also makes fun of other superheroes and their franchises has already been done now, though I do like that he calls out James Brolin as Thanos, in references to The Avengers. Did they really need to use Brolin again? On the positive side, the movie focuses less on big dumb fights where nobody gets hurt. They are still there, but the movie doesn’t really end with a big action scene. In fact, I’m not sure where the movie ends because there some substantial scenes early in the credits. While all the snarky humor is good, it isn’t great, so while I enjoyed it, I didn’t think it was laugh out loud funny. A few new characters are introduced, including a few who are killed, and I think that is the key to making this a little bit better movie so that Reynolds has people to interact with other than nameless bad guys. Still, they amount to that many more characters in the ever expanding Marvel universe. If you liked the first one (and I think you definitely need to see the first one before this one), then this is a pretty good sequel.
