Avengers: Infinity War 2018

My least favorite thing about Marvel movies is the fights. They throw each other around, destroy everything around them, and nobody gets hurt. The better movies use that sparingly. In this movie, it is almost the entire movie. There are so many fight scenes. And there is a huge cast of characters and they all get in different fights! With a big cast and a lot of locations, most of which are not on earth, this movie is a big mess. It isn’t awful: It is still entertaining and it is great to see all of these characters, some interacting for the first time. One of my other complaints is the imaginary political storylines, and that is pretty much gone from this movie, so that is sort of a plus. I also didn’t like the ending, but I will save that for a spoiler. This whole movie is almost like a greatest hits where we just get snippets of a bunch of different characters and then everyone unites for this kind of goofy plot about getting all of the power in the universe by collecting rocks. Of course there is almost no way to take a bunch of giant movies and have them all lead to something even more giant. Ultimately it has to be disappointing. And this movie compounds that since it is only the first part of a two-part movie, which almost never works out well. So I am actually pretty disappointed, but glad it is almost over, and I still hope the next episode will make this one worth it.

My biggest problem is that so many characters appear to die, but only at the very end. You know they aren’t going to permanently get rid of all of that money, I mean, those characters. I guess in some ways this is better than having them all falling to their deaths and the movie ends, then at the beginning of the next movie, someone swoops in and saves them. But this probably isn’t far from that either. Dr. Strange says this is the only way of 140 million possibilities, so you have to think this is going according to his plan. The comic books are always killing off characters and bringing them back. This is the problem with magic and superpowers: all you have to do is come up with something that nobody knew anything about, like Thanos forgot to say pretty please when he snapped his fingers or something like that.
My biggest complaint is the fights. Most of the movie involves the Avengers fighting against beings they can’t really hope to defeat, until somehow they do defeat them. Except for Thanos who is unbeatable, but they still are able to delay him, or land a punch. It is kind of silly for the weaker superheroes like Spider Man to have any chance against him.
Lastly, Thanos. Killing off half of everyone will make the world a better place? Does killing half the weeds in your yard really accomplish much of anything? They will be back. If you want to do something, snap your fingers and make half the world sterile instead of murdering everyone. Even if he kills everyone off, maybe in fifty years, or a hundred, everything will be back to where it was. Then you kill them off again?
