Mission: Impossible - Fallout 2018

A-

I have not seen any of the Mission Impossible movies, but I am old enough to remember watching the TV show and enjoyed it though I was a little young for the political intrigue. The movie series has been getting better reviews lately and the sixth installment is getting the best reviews yet, with an 86 on Metacritic. This means I went in with kind of high expectations, but I think I was realistic about it being similar to Jason Bourne or James Bond movies. In the TV show, it was more of a group effort, but this is mostly about Tom Cruise, though he does have very good backup from Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, so he doesn’t have to do everything alone. Everything works well in the movie: the story, action, stunts, fights, suspense, intrigue, etc. It does run out of gas a little at the end before a big finish, but otherwise is almost non-stop action. There are a few twists and turns that are satisfying, but with almost everyone having questionable motives, it is hard be surprised when someone turns out to be a traitor, either working for the bad guy or working against the Tom Cruise character. The final setup is a cliché but it works and they have to have something. So maybe it isn’t the greatest movie of all time, but it is very effective at what it is trying to do and a fun way to spend a couple of hours.
