Ready Player One 2018

B

Ready Player One got fairly average reviews when it came out and it was hard for me to get excited about another movie based on people playing a video game. However, I was able to get a free copy and wanted to watch it before the year was out in case it made my Top 10. I’m not sure that it will, but maybe not that far off. This is a type of movie that has been done quite a bit and there doesn’t seem to be that much original in it, however everything is done very well. The movie is mostly special effects and they look very good even if they still look like CGI with stylized character avatars in the game world. There are maybe a few too many homages to 1980’s music, video games, and other trivia that make this seem like it is more for a person of my age than young people, but it was still fun for me anyway. A few plot points were disappointingly easy in a movie that revolves around solving a series of puzzles (in a spoiler below). Unfortunately those puzzles deal with a fictional person who we know nothing about, so they aren’t something that easy to guess, though at least one clue deals with a real video game for the Atari 2600. Ultimately it is a fun movie with tons and tons of CGI action, but lacks much complexity and not even that much tension because you kind of know how things will go.
