The Sisters Brothers 2018

B+

I had heard good things about this Gold Rush era western starring John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix as the titular brothers whose last name is Sisters, but it has been released slowly so I had to wait a little. The brothers are feared hired killers who are working for a rich guy in Oregon known as The Commodore who sends them after people who have stolen from him. Reilly’s character questions their work while his brother just wants to get paid and move on to the next job. The plot starts off like a typical western, but takes some odd directions, featuring some dialogue that might be at home in a Coen brothers movie. Meanwhile, the scenery looks great and the movie is shot really well giving it an artsy feel. If you want a conventional movie, you may end up disappointed, but if you can just enjoy the very good performances and some very nice scenery (set in Oregon and California, but filmed in Spain) and not worry too much about the plot, you should enjoy it. I feel like the plot was a little bit random and didn’t pay off completely, so I am only giving the movie a B+.
