A Wrinkle in Time 2018

B+

This was a movie I was really looking forward to and then the reviews were disappointingly lackluster. I hoped it would be similar to Tomorrowland which critics were lukewarm about, but I enjoyed (at least in part because it reminded me of brainy children’s sci-fi like A Wrinkle in Time). I couldn’t get anyone to go see it with me, but I got a free movie ticket, so I went by myself before it left theaters. The visuals are very good, so I think it is worth seeing on a big screen.

I think with a crazy movie like this you are either willing to just accept everything and go along for the journey or you aren’t. It had been so long since I read the book (as a kid) that I had no expectations of what the story or characters would be like and the reviews were bad enough I wasn’t even that hopeful. And for me that worked. I enjoyed watching all the psychedlic stuff and, realizing it is really a movie for kids, I was willing to accept the basic themes about loving your family and self, plus a lot of the cheesy things some of the characters had to say. The movie relies heavily on some young actors, but I thought they did well. Really the adults were given some of the more challenging material to make work. It isn’t for everyone and if you’re willing to accept this puzzle that you probably aren’t given enough information to solve, you could enjoy it.
