Captain Marvel 2019

B

I knew very little about this movie but was happy to get to see it the first weekend it came out. It has gotten decent reviews, but other Marvel movies have been getting better reviews lately. While it has a unique approach to an origin story, I agree this is a step below some of the other Marvel stuff, really more sci-fi than superhero, kind of reminding me more of Star Trek almost, not necessarily in a good way. It is still a good movie with some decent humor, emotion, and story. Other than the presence of Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, there isn’t much here that ties in with the rest of the Marvel universe, though it is known that Captain Marvel will appear in the next Avengers movie (a mid-credit scene confirming this, but I feel like we knew it already). There are also some prominent female roles here, but nothing feels all that different and it didn’t seem to me like a girl power movie. There are a lot of pop references to the mid 90’s when part of the movie takes place that seem a little distracting. Her suit looked in the previews and artwork like car upholstery and still kind of seems that way, but while Brie Larson seemed kind of generic in those same bits, I was glad to see that she actually does a decent job of fleshing out her character. Overall, there are some good aspects to the movie including an unusual origin story, but the movie doesn’t really distinguish itself so I will give it a low-ish B.
