Knives Out 2019

A-

This movie got good reviews and people seem to like it, so I was looking forward to it even though I didn’t know much about it. It is a whodunnit, which tells you plenty. The cast is pretty large with some big names. Daniel Craig plays a southern private detective investigating a suspicious suicide in Massachusetts and all of his suspects had an axe to grind and aren’t telling the truth. It is fun to watch the truth slowly revealed, with some nice twists and turns right up to the end. There are enough funny parts to keep it light and fun, but it is a solid mystery movie and keeps your attention as various clues are revealed and things are explained. This may appeal more to older people who grew up on Columbo and Poirot, but it would still be hard not to like. I’ll take off a little for this being a well worn genre of movie and kind of unbelievably convoluted, but I still feel like it is well written with strong performances. Update in June 2020: I watched this again on Amazon and it was fun watching the performances and knowing how everything was going to turn out.
