Us 2019

B-

I was looking forward to seeing this movie after enjoying 2017’s Get Out (which I even ended up buying on Blu-ray), also directed by Jordan Peele. I knew this was more of a horror movie than Get Out and I don’t like horror movies, but I thought it would probably also have a sense of humor and would be fun to watch with an enthusiastic audience. The movie starts out with some flashback setup, then some more setup, and then scary stuff starts to happen. But in the third act, the explanation for what is going on really lost me, both in terms of the complexity, and the completely off the wall story, which I won’t go into. There are some good creepy, scary moments, and a significant amount of violence though it is almost comical. If you like horror movies, you should enjoy it, though I don’t know that it is really a classic horror movie with the third act attached. And we had a pretty enthusiastic audience which was probably one of the better parts of the experience. I felt like Get Out was hurt by the kind of outlandish proposition and this movie is way beyond that, so this only get a B- from me.
