Yesterday 2019

A-

This movie got kind of mixed reviews and the previews weren’t great, but audiences still seemed to like it. It is a neat magical premise where a struggling singer/songwriter wakes up in a world where the Beatles never existed. Now he has a ticket to all the fame and success he can handle, as long as he can remember the songs. It is a neat concept and is fun to watch his friends’ or colleagues’ reactions when he plays some classic like “Yesterday” or “Hey Jude” and they think he just made it up on the spot. There are a lot of funny wrinkles tossed in, and it never had a chance to drag. The lead actor, Himesh Patel, is very good as he deals with his very unexpected situation and also does a great job performing songs. Supporting parts are well played especially the adorable Lily James as his long suffering first manager and a very funny Kate McKinnon as his new one. The only real weakness is the romance which seems unlikely and forced into the plot. Critics were not as impressed, but it worked for me.
