Superman: Man of Tomorrow 2020

A-

Watching this DC animated movie makes me shake my head wondering why DC has such a hard time making good live action movies. Superman is a bit of a challenge since he is pretty much invincible and all-powerful, but is made easier since this is part of his origin story, freshly relocated to Metropolis and forced into action by invading aliens. It has a lot of similarities to aspects of the Marvel’s The Avengers movie. There are times when it can get a little hokey, like when Superman speechifies as a monster politely bides his time until the speech is over and he roars back into action. But generally everything works. As the origin story it is fun seeing characters early in a slightly alternative arc including not just Superman, but Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as well, plus some new characters I was not familiar with. Maybe it wouldn’t work in live action, but the movie is certainly effective here with some sharp writing, decent (albeit low budget) animation, and voice acting, though I didn’t recognize Zach Quinto as Luthor. This is one of the better DC animated movies.
