Last Night in Soho 2021

C+

I hadn’t heard much about this movie, but it is by Edgar Wright and got okay reviews, so I went to see it. It seems a little by the numbers. A college age girl is accepted to a fashion college in London and starts having some crazy dreams and visions. It doesn’t help that she is following a similar path to her mother who committed suicide when the girl was 7. One hook is that she loves vintage 1960’s styles, so her dreams and fashion sense tie into that era, meaning Edgar Wright gets to use some of his favorite music and we are treated to period clothing, styles, cars, London, etc. The student’s life seems tied into the life of Anya Taylor-Joy of Queen’s Gambit, who wants to be a lounge singer but instead gets diverted into prostitution. Unfortunately I got a phone call that took me away from the movie for about 15 minutes in the middle, so I missed a few key developments that may have improved the movie somewhat (I read up on them later). Still, a few of the plot twists are easy to see coming and the movie doesn’t distinguish itself. The ending ties things together nicely but also strains credulity in some ways. So it ends up being more stylish than substantial, venturing into horror ghost story stuff that I don’t really care for.
