The Suicide Squad 2021

C+

In James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 one of the things that turned me off was the casual lethal violence played for laughs. With an R rating a given in this case, Gunn was able to make an entire movie based on that, with even more gore and graphic violence. Otherwise the movie has some promise, but can’t quite deliver. It is largely enjoyable with some good characters who sometimes develop a little, though nothing like Guardians. The humor is sometimes a little too goofy, though most of it works. Some of the best parts are pieces of misdirection and I was glad I was unspoiled on what would be happening. It does move quickly, which is impressive since it is a little over two hours long. But the intentionally repulsive violence is kind of like someone giving you a vomit flavored jelly bean. Ultimately it was too big of a turnoff for something that otherwise isn’t that rewarding.
