The Bad Guys 2022
I didn’t see The Bad Guys when it hit theaters, but it was a good choice from Redbox once it came out on disc. Dreamworks makes some good animated movies and this one got decent reviews, but it is a bit underwhelming. The plot centers on a criminal gang of villain animals, a wolf, shark, snake, tarantula, and piranha. People and animals live together in this world, which seems a little odd (not to mention fish walking around), especially since animals seem to run things. The movie involves a series of crime capers by the expert bad guys, with probably a little too much attention on the action and not enough on jokes and character, other than the wolf, who is the leader. Some of the humor is pretty lowbrow (a flatulent piranha) and despite some big names in the voice cast, it seems like they are trying a little too hard. The snake sounds like Danny DeVito, but is actually Marc Maron. I don’t think the writing is particularly sharp. The plot has a few twists and turns, but not a lot of surprises or depth. Still it is enjoyable enough and the ending is good.
