Strange World 2022

B

This seemed like a neat concept for an animated movie: a retro sci-fi adventure movie. Though it is made by Disney, it seems like something a little more up Pixar’s alley, though the line between the two seems to be disappearing. It also bears a strong resemblance to this year’s Lightyear: retro sci-fi, a world of dangerous plants, and a main character in a homosexual relationship. I‘m sure people will scream how woke the movie is, and while that aspect of the movie doesn’t bother me, it becomes unoriginal storytelling if it is used repeatedly. Also the movie seems like it is more of a delivery vehicle for worn out father-son issues without adding much new, or unexpected, or that interesting. What saves the movie, if anything, is the amazing visuals. I watched it in 2D, but it seems like it would have a lot of potential in 3D and/or IMAX. The design of the ships and equipment are first rate, plus the huge number of almost abstract creatures and scenery, providing ample wonder as well as danger. The rest of the movie is sadly average, like so many of the recent Disney movies. That doesn’t mean it is bad, but keep expectations low. I also expect a lot of user reviews to be very negative as people attack Disney for being too woke, so read between the lines and see if they really didn’t like the movie or they just insist on being bigots.
