Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2023

B

This movie feels a little more confident than it should. I think this was on display in the previews, which seemed fun, but maybe not as fun as they were making it seem like it should be. It isn't great, but it has a good mix of action, laughs, and characters, though it runs a little long. There is a lot of crazy magic stuff that makes anything possible (except when it doesn't). The characters are generally fun, though it feels too much like they are pushing for a franchise. I didn't even realize there had already been three Dungeons and Dragons movies (the first had terrible reviews and still got two direct-to-video sequels), so this much better reviewed movie will definitely be a franchise. I wasn't familiar with most of the younger stars, including one, Sophia Lillis, who looks like she could be Amy Adams' daughter. Michelle Rodriguez is good as a very tough warrior, as well as Chris Pine as the main hero, though I am not sure why he needs to sing (except that he can sing, as evidenced by Into the Woods). It feels a lot like a mishmash of Harry Potter, Avengers, and Lord of the Rings, and, while derivative, still holds its own.
