Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret 2023

B+

This movie got good reviews when it came out (99% on Rotten Tomatoes!), but for some reason I didn't see it then. It is a very, very girly movie, about an 11-12 year old girl and her friends in the early 70's talking about and living through puberty. Meanwhile, Margaret's father was raised Jewish and her mother was raised Christian, so they have raised Margaret without any kind of religion and she is trying to figure out some things, which is why she has a funny way of starting her prayers. It's a good story and there are some really funny moments, which is why it is getting as high as a B+ from me because otherwise I am not the demographic for this movie. It is generally light and everyone is nice, though there is some drama in the final chapter, which is almost welcome after the overwhelming positivity of the rest of the movie. So the movie isn't hard hitting, but the child stars (as well as a solid cast of adults) do a great job and despite all the nostalgia, it still works surprisingly well.
