Die Hard 1988

A

Die Hard was released as a big summer action movie, but has become a classic. Oddly enough, it has become a Christmas classic, since it is set on Christmas Eve. So it is almost Christmas and I thought I should finally go ahead and watch this blu-ray that I bought five years ago. I am not sure I ever watched the movie all the way through, maybe missing a little bit of the beginning. It does a nice job of setting up a very smart villain with a very tough, wisecracking hero. The true intent of the robbery at the center of the action is revealed slowly and is maybe a little overly intricate for what it is, but quite spectacular in its use of high explosives. Not everything works: For instance, I‘m not sure why the limo driver has such a big role for such a tiny payoff. The detonators are supposed to be critical, but once the terrorists get them back, it didn’t seem like they had time to install them anywhere (though maybe I missed something). One thing I like is that you have all these bad guy terrorists, but there are several other bad guys, or just jerks, thrown in too for good effect. Definitely a fun movie and a classic action movie, but I‘m still not sure it is a Christmas movie.
