The Quiet Man 1952

I had heard good things about this movie and it seems like most people would consider it to be a classic, but never had a chance to see it. I finally picked up a digital copy and it seemed appropriate to watch it on St. Patrick's Day. I think I expected a little more than what this movie delivers. It is a very silly romance movie and the characters do a bunch of completely irrational things, which continues pretty much until the end. The fact that all of this is taking place in Ireland and with an array of colorful Irish characters that I didn't care anything about doesn't make any of it better. It feels almost like an episode of very old television, like I Love Lucy or something. John Wayne's character is interesting as a retired boxer going back to his roots in Ireland. But the rest of the movie is too cute and sweet and mostly nonsensical. Still, it is John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara with John Ford directing (winning the Oscar in what had to be a weak year). If I had realized how really lightweight and silly it was going to be, I might have enjoyed it a little more. If you are in the mood for that kind of thing, it isn't terrible, but even during that time period there were much better romance movies and comedies. I feel like it is the worst kind of crowd pleaser.
