Soul Food 1997

C+

I had always heard good things about this movie and it was one of the better reviewed choices from a Screen Pass that I got. Unfortunately the digital copy of the movie I borrowed was not high defintion, just SD, so it didn’t look its best. Also, it is 25 years old at this point, so it is hard to know the context of the movie, with a cast maybe better known then than now. I thought the characters were mostly unrealistic and a lot of the dialogue and situations felt forced. There is a lot of voiceover from a kid in the third generation of a black family in Chicago. The movie just feels very rough around the edges and the result is that it feels more like something you would see on TV except it is rated R, so there are some adult situations and a little bad language. Ultimately it is harmless enough, but it feels a little like a generic family drama.
