Waterworld 1995

C+

Waterworld is a famous filmmaking disaster, the most expensive movie ever filmed at the time, which failed to make back that cost at the box office after getting poor reviews. I never saw it, but it eventually came out in 4k blu-ray and I was able to borrow a copy with a Screen Pass. I watched it over two nights and thought the first half was better than I expected, presenting some neat ideas and some cool action, like Mad Max on the ocean. That was the concept for the movie, but then the second night was much worse as the plot got going and there was more dialogue, with poor writing and stiff performances by just about everyone. While most of the movie looks pretty good in 4k, the entire original negative must not have been available because some of it doesn’t look good at all. And then a lot of the stuff in the last big battle scene just looks like an indoor set, like something out of the 1960’s sword and sandal movies. The movie is a bit of a cult favorite today, but really misses the mark for the most part. Maybe still worth watching just for some of the neat ideas and crazy stuff, and a must if you enjoy implausible plots.
