Safety Not Guaranteed 2012

B+

I got a free digital copy of this movie, and even though my copy is only in standard definition, I watched based on the neat concept, the always beguiling Aubrey Plaza, and very strong reviews. The idea is a magazine writer takes two interns to write a story about whoever has run a classified ad about needing a partner for time travel, “safety not guaranteed.” It is based on an actual ad, but the ad itself was a joke by an editor looking to fill up some room in the classifieds. It is mostly a road trip movie about a magazine writer who takes two interns to write an article about whoever might have posted the ad. Plaza is one of the interns and is able to strike up a rapport with the guy. It is very low budget and Jack Johnson plays a character very similar to the one he played two years later in Let’s Be Cops, which is funny and a little obnoxious and empty, but fortunately it isn’t really his movie. The movie works for the most part, building somewhat as we get to know the guy who wants to time travel, and you feel like maybe it will not go well. It is offbeat, but enjoyable, only occasionally looking like a home movie project and with too much shaky cam.
