Lucy 2014

B+

I borrowed this movie using a Screen Pass and was happy to get it in 4k with Dolby Vision and Atmos. It really does look and sound great. I had no idea what to expect from the movie and thought maybe it was a space movie. I knew Luc Besson wrote and directed it and reviews were mixed, but generally positive. It has a sort of similar concept as Limitless where a person is suddenly able to unlock all of that unused power of the brain. The problem, in real life, is that is a myth, so right away you are off into bad science, which can still be okay. Scarlett Johansson was taking on a lot of crazy sci-fi movies at the time, including Ghost in the Shell, Her, and Under the Skin and while they are all flawed, they are all interesting, usually visually stunning, which is maybe why they wanted Miss Johansson. The movie isn’t really that long at 90 minutes and I think that is important because it could really drag otherwise. But as is, it’s just a great ride to go on, making maybe less and less sense as it goes, but you don’t really have a lot of time to question or get tired of it. Plus it changes shape as it goes, starting out with Asian gangsters, before getting caught up in the sci-fi brain stuff. I enjoyed watching it, but not for the plot or concepts, just the crazy stuff going on. If I had paid money for it, or if it was longer, I probably wouldn’t rate it as high.
