Cars 3 2017

C

I was not a huge fan of Cars, never saw Cars 2, and I had no intention of seeing this latest installment except I got $5 off an already cheap ticket and could get Disney Movie Rewards points, plus I generally like Pixar movies, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to see it while it is still in the theaters. It met my low expectations. The basic story of racing is not really that interesting to me and the main themes seem pretty similar to other movies if not the other Cars movie. It is done well, but a movie about a plucky sports star who shouldn’t win has been done a million times, including all the fake broadcaster commentary and nasty naysayers. Here Lightning McQueen is now getting beat by higher tech younger racers and wants to win another race or else retire. Physically incapable of going as fast as the newer cars, he needs to dig deep to find another way to win. I guess. It’s completely impossible and cars are somehow able to go zooming past a lead car in any race, so it’s a little hard to get excited by it. It will be fine for kids, but is basically a waste of time unless you just really like these characters. It’s not bad, it’s just not that good. I originally gave this movie a score of B-, but after further thought, decided it was more like a C. I think it was enjoyable enough to watch so I scored it higher at first.

The animated short at the beginning, “Lou,” is pretty good and I’m glad I got a chance to see it since I will never get the DVD.
