The Sixth Sense 1999

A

This is a really well-crafted movie. The less you know about it the better and even the previews gave away too much. The movie keeps developing as more and more is revealed about what is going on. So I’m not about to ruin it. Bruce Willis does a good job playing an average guy who is also a great child pyschologist. Just when you are about to give up on Willis he turns in another great performance that restores your hope and sets you up for whatever his next disappointment will be. Maybe it’s Willis’ disappointments that make him strive to do better next time. The kid who plays the patient turns in such a good performance that I wonder if he doesn’t have nightmares after playing the role. Why couldn’t this guy have been the young Darth Vader? At least he can act.

I was expecting a lot more of a horror movie with a lot of Night of the Living Dead stuff. Though there are a few moments that make you jump and also some gross scenery/makeup this is more of a pyschological movie combining elements of mysteries and doctor-patient relationships. This is positive, since I’m not a fan of horror movies.

This is the best movie I’ve seen this year. And though it doesn’t blow you away with quality, there are so few flaws to speak of that it’s hard to take off points, unlike other good movies this year like A Civil Action, The Matrix, and Notting Hill that, while entertaining, had serious flaws. But my main warning to you is to find out as little as possible about the movie before you go. Instead let it pull you in.

I give it an A.
